The Story Behind Opening Play
Born in Baton Rouge, Lockwood still has childhood memories of Mike the Tiger, the Piccadilly and bus rides to Third Street. At age four, she moved to New York where she grew up. As a college student, Lory returned to the South to study art at Tulane University in New Orleans. She has been a Louisiana resident ever since.
With her college age daughter bound for LSU, Lory wanted to get acquainted with her new football team and so sat down to watch the 2004 Sugar Bowl. Excited and inspired by the team’s performance and the energy and enthusiasm of the fans, Lory began the painting called “Opening Play.” At the same time, she found it necessary to start her football education with the many positions, gloves, shoes, insignias – LSU tigers, Nokia and SEC emblems, the JB patch, and even interference plays. She learned the names of the players, the coaches, read their books and has followed the team ever since. For Lory, this team and these players became the idealized heroes who reflect the hopes and dreams of their school and supporters.
